The Spire by William Golding – Salisbury
23rd – 25th October 2026
Overview
Join us for a literary weekend in Salisbury inspired by The Spire, one of the most powerful novels by Nobel Prize-winning author William Golding. Set beneath the soaring presence of Salisbury Cathedral, the novel explores faith, ambition, and obsession with extraordinary psychological intensity.
This weekend brings together book lovers for thoughtful discussion, shared meals, and time to explore Salisbury Cathedral, whose soaring spire lies at the heart of Golding’s novel, view the Magna Carta and have a literary tour of Salisbury. As with our Winchester reading holiday, the focus is on place, story, and companionship — with space to reflect, converse, and connect.
Why this book, why this place?
The Spire is inseparable from Salisbury Cathedral. Golding uses the building not merely as a backdrop, but as a living presence, a symbol of spiritual striving and human cost.
Over the weekend, we’ll explore how the physical reality of the cathedral informs the novel, from its architecture and history to the psychological intensity of its central character. Standing within the cathedral itself offers a rare opportunity to deepen your understanding of the book and experience it in the place that inspired it.
