Join us in medieval France for a step back in time as we visit the medieval city of Carcassonne for the book Labyrinth by Kate Mosse, while staying at the 4* Hôtel Le Donjon inside the medieval city walls themselves.

Labyrinth
is set in two distinct time periods around Carcassonne in the Languedoc region of France. The novel alternates between modern-day and 13th-century Carcassonne, a fortified city in the Languedoc region. The historical sections of the book take place during the Crusades against the Cathars, a religious group persecuted by the Catholic Church.

Carcassonne's ancient walls and medieval history provide a vivid backdrop for the tale, which revolves around the search for the Holy Grail. The modern-day narrative explores the same region, intertwining the fates of the two main characters across time.

We will visit and come through the Narbonne Gate, where we'll be transported to the 13th century, wandering the cobblestone streets that echo the footsteps of Alais. Explore the Basilica of Saints Nazarius and Celsus, where history and legend intertwine.

Books in Places
Having run book clubs in Bristol and Exeter for over 7 years, Books in Places is an extension of that experience. A relaxed, sociable meeting of like-minded people who enjoy talking about a book they love, but in the city where the book is set. A trip with book-lovers where memories are made.

Accommodation

The 4* Hôtel Le Donjon hotel is situated inside the city walls of Carcassonne. It is only one of two hotels actually based in the city walls, and everyone loved their stay there in 2025. Waking up inside the city, just by the castle itself, is the most amazing experience.

The hotel provides guests with air-conditioned rooms with a desk, a kettle, a minibar, a safety deposit box, a flat-screen TV and a private bathroom with a bath or shower. At Hôtel Le Donjon - Cœur de La Cité Médiévale, all rooms have bed linen and towels.
