About BOOKS in places
Whenever I visit a new country or city, I love immersing myself in its atmosphere through a novel set there. Reading a book rooted in the place I’m exploring adds depth to my experience, making the streets, culture, and history come alive in a way nothing else can.
After years of running the Exeter and Bristol book clubs, I realised that this immersive approach resonated with everyone. We didn’t just read books—we experienced them. We read Elif Shafak and then gathered in a Turkish restaurant to discuss her work over a traditional meal. We read Grace Dent and met in a restaurant worthy of one of her own reviews.
From this, Books in Places was born. A way for book lovers from across the UK and beyond to come together and truly step into the worlds they read about.
The book clubs I run have always been about more than just books—they’re about connection. The book club is open to all, welcoming new members at every meeting. The heart of it all is simple: a friendly, relaxed space where people can share their love of literature.
Everyone arrives on a Books in Places trip not knowing each other and leaves as firm friends. This is the real joy of running Books in Places. Bringing together like-minded people who then want to join future trips.
In 2023, we took our first literary-inspired trips to Bath and Florence. In 2024, we expanded to Barcelona, Florence, Pompeii, Delft, and Lyme Regis. And in 2025, the journey continues, with exciting destinations including Egypt, Budapest, and new UK-based trips.
Want to stay updated as new trips are announced? Leave your email, and I’ll keep you posted!
I will still be running the Bristol book gang. We meet every two weeks, so if you are in the area, do come along.
