An island of sunshine and secrets
In A Stranger in Corfu, Alex Preston takes us to Vidos, a small island just off Corfu, where former intelligence officers find that the past is never entirely buried. It is a wonderfully evocative setting for a novel of friendship, suspicion and hidden histories.
Our reading retreat offers a chance to enjoy the island atmosphere alongside fellow book lovers. Expect relaxed days, good food, conversation about the novel and plenty of time to swim, explore or settle somewhere shady with a book.

A Stranger in Corfu
Alex Preston
On Vidos, an island off the coast of Corfu, a community of former MI6 operatives lives with the secrets of its past. When one of them is found dead, uneasy friendships and loyalties begin to unravel.
Preston’s suspenseful novel combines the beauty of the Ionian islands with espionage, moral ambiguity and the question of whether anyone can truly leave their old life behind.
We will talk about the characters, the island setting and the secrets at the heart of the story – with our own Corfu experience adding an extra dimension to the discussion.
Discover the Corfu beyond the page
Corfu is a beautiful place to unwind, with clear Ionian waters, green hills, olive groves and colourful streets. Corfu Town is especially rewarding to explore, while nearby Vidos provides a fascinating geographical connection to our chosen novel.
We will be based in Ipsos, on the island’s east coast. Apollo Studios is set against a mountain backdrop, around a 10–15 minute walk from the beach and resort centre.
Optional local excursions may be available through the resort host, including boat trips and sightseeing. These are subject to local arrangements and are not part of the included holiday price.

Time to unwind
There is no pressure to fill every day: swimming, beach time and reading all count.
Talking about books is part of the holiday
The first five evenings are hosted, giving us time to get to know one another and talk about A Stranger in Corfu, other favourite books and our experiences on the island.
Four dinners are included at the nearby Onima Restaurant. We will also make time for our relaxed “A Book I Love” evening, where everyone can recommend a personal favourite.
The final two days are unhosted, so you can relax or explore entirely at your own pace.
Apollo Studios in Ipsos
Our base for the week is the 3-star Apollo Studios, a small, friendly property nestled in greenery with mountain views and an outdoor swimming pool.
Studios have air conditioning, a kitchenette, safe, hairdryer and private balcony. The beach, shops and restaurants are a short walk away.
Included dinners are at Onima Restaurant, approximately 15 minutes’ walk from the hotel. A local Greek climate fee of €2 per person per night is payable at the hotel. Room-floor upgrades may cost extra.
