Labyrinth is set in two distinct time periods around Carcassonne in the Languedoc region of France. The novel alternates between modern-day and 13th-century Carcassonne, a fortified city in the Languedoc region. The historical sections of the book take place during the Crusades against the Cathars, a religious group persecuted by the Catholic Church.
Carcassonne's ancient walls and medieval history provide a vivid backdrop for the tale, which revolves around the search for the Holy Grail. The modern-day narrative explores the same region, intertwining the fates of the two main characters across time.
