Tombland by C.J. Sansom — Norwich

Sunday 8th – Tuesday 10th March 2026

Step into the turbulent world of Tudor England with a weekend break in historic Norwich, inspired by Tombland by C.J. Sansom. Follow in the footsteps of lawyer-detective Matthew Shardlake as we explore the political unrest, gripping mystery, and rich heritage that shape this powerful novel.

What to expect:

  • Two nights’ accommodation in central Norwich, perfectly placed for exploring the city’s medieval heart
  • A walking tour of Norwich, taking in key historic sites from the novel, including Tombland itself and the Cathedral Close
  • A book club dinner on Saturday evening, where we’ll discuss Tombland and its themes of justice, rebellion, and loyalty
  • Free time to explore Elm Hill, the castle, and Norwich’s thriving cultural scene
  • Breakfast each morning and dinner on Saturday included

This immersive weekend offers the perfect balance of bookish conversation, historical exploration, and relaxed social time with fellow readers — all set in a city steeped in Tudor history.

Tombland is a gripping and meticulously researched historical mystery set during Kett’s Rebellion of 1549 — a pivotal yet often overlooked chapter in English history. Whether you’re already a fan of the Shardlake series or discovering it for the first time, this trip promises to bring the past vividly to life.

So everyone can stay together, I have booked rooms in the historic Maids Head Hotel in the Tombland area of Norwich itself for the two nights. The hotel itself has 800 years of history and is the oldest hotel in England, dating from the 15th century. So around before Henry VIII himself! It is the social side of these trips that everyone enjoys the most, so having everyone together in one place adds to the experience.
