A weekend in Krakow for The Tattooist of Auschwitz
The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris is a poignant novel based on the true story of Lale Sokolov, a Jewish man who is forced to tattoo identification numbers on fellow prisoners at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Amid the horrors, Lale meets and falls in love with Gita, another prisoner.
The book explores themes of survival, resilience, and love in the darkest of times. We will visit Krakow to explore the rich history and culture of the city, and then visit Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum and Memorial to better understand the atrocities of the Holocaust and honour the memory of those who suffered there.
I have organised the whole trip with an Independent travel agent, The Tim Potter Travel, so that everything can be arranged for you, including flights. We will be staying at Hotel Santi in Krakow Old Town, a beautiful old building with a quaint feeling about it.
Included in this trip will be
- Return flights from London (or alternative)
- Large Cabin Bag
- Return airport transfer (shared coach)
- 2 night Bed & Breakfast Accommodation (18th July - 20th July 2025) at Hotel Santi, Krakow Old Town
- Auschwitz Birkenau Museum Tour from Krakow with Pick up from Krakow includes transport, entrance admission
- Book club meeting to discuss the book after our visit to the museum
- Meal at a restaurant to discuss The tattooist of Auschwitz

ITINERARY
Friday 18th July 2025
After arriving in Krakow and having time to check in to your hotel, we will all meet up in the evening over something to eat. These initial evenings offer a wonderful opportunity to meet everyone and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere while getting to know our fellow book lovers. It's always fascinating to hear what everyone is reading.
Saturday 19th July 2025
We will all travel to Auschwitz Birkenau Museum for a tour of the museum. Transport will take us from the city of Krakow to the museum, where we will have plenty of time to explore and relate what we see to the book.
After exploring the museum, we will head back to the city for a chance to relax and refresh, before meeting up again for our evening meal and book club meeting event in a local restaurant. This meal is included in the price.
Sunday 20th July 2025
Today is free for you to explore Krakow, either on your own with others from the group. We are staying in Krakow old town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, home to Europe's largest medieval market square, Rynek Główny, lined with cafés, shops, and the iconic St. Mary's Basilica. Alternatively, there is Kazimierz District, once the Jewish quarter, or visit Schindler’s Factory, a museum dedicated to the wartime history of Krakow, telling the story of Oskar Schindler and the city's Jewish population
Accommodation
For this trip we will recommend staying at Hotel Santi, in Krakow old town.
Hotel Santi is a charming boutique hotel located in Krakow’s Old Town, just a short walk from the main square (Rynek Główny). Housed in a historic 19th-century building, the hotel offers an elegant blend of classic and modern styles.
