Pompeii by Robert Harris – September 2025
Home » Books  » Pompeii by Robert Harris – September 2025

Pompeii by Robert Harris is set against the backdrop of the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, which led to the destruction of the Roman city of Pompeii.

The novel follows the story of Marcus Attilius Primus, a Roman aqueduct engineer who arrives in Pompeii to take charge of the Aqua Augusta, the city's vital water supply system. Attilius becomes suspicious of the strange occurrences happening in and around the city, particularly the dropping water levels in the aqueducts. As he investigates, he becomes embroiled in a web of corruption, conspiracy, and danger.

Harris uses meticulous research and historical accuracy to recreate the setting and atmosphere of ancient Pompeii, bringing the city and its inhabitants to life. The book provides a vivid depiction of the daily life, politics, and social dynamics of the time. It also explores the complexities of Roman society, including the tension between the wealthy elite and the common people, as well as the role of slaves.

The perfect book for bringing the ruins of Pompeii alive.

Another great book to read for visiting Pompeii is The Wolf Den, by Elodie Harper, the story of Amara, who was once a beloved daughter, until her father's death plunged her family into penury. Now though she is owned by a man she despises and lives as a slave in Pompeii's infamous brothel, her only value the desire she can stir in others. But Amara's spirit is far from broken. We will talk about this book as well why we visit Pompeii.

The trip is all about being sociable and making new friends. Enjoying Pompeii and the surrounding area with new people and sharing the experience with them.

Protected by a thick layer of ash, Pompeii life and people has been captured and preserved for nearly 2,000 years. Visiting is an unforgettable walk back in time.

Pasta and a glass of Italian wine or a Spritz will be the perfect setting for our book club meeting to discuss the book and what we have seen on our visit to Pompeii

ITINERARY

Friday 5th September 2025

After arriving in the afternoon, we will all meetup in the evening and have a welcome drink in Pompeii town before heading out to for something to eat locally.

Saturday 6th September 2025
In the morning we will meet up and head to the ruins of Pompeii, where we will spend the day exploring the ruins and soaking up the atmosphere of the town.
The town is a large area that does take time to explore if you want to see everything, but during our trip we will take in many of the most interesting areas of the town, such at the forum, the baths and the brothel.

After exploring the ruins for the day, we will head into the surprisingly charming town of Pompeii itself and have a meal and book club meeting in a restaurant in town to discuss the book and our experience of the day.
Sunday 7th September
Today is a free today to spend as you wish either exploring alone or with others. The area around Pompeii has many interesting attractions for the visitor, including the nearby Herculaneum (the first town discovered under the lava flow from the eruption and in some ways more impressive than Pompeii). The town around Herculaneum is also quite charming.

Having run book clubs in Bristol and Exeter for over 5 years, Books in Places is an extension of that experience. A relaxed sociable meeting of like minded people who enjoy talking about a book they love, but time in the city the book is set.
