Persuasion
by jane austen
A Christmas weekend in Bath including a visit to the beautiful Bath Christmas market, while we soak up the atmosphere and talk about Persuasion by Jane Austen. Bath is the city where the Austen family lived for many years and Persuasion is partly set.
At twenty-seven, Anne Elliot is no longer young and has few romantic prospects. Eight years earlier, she had been persuaded by her friend Lady Russell to break off her engagement to Frederick Wentworth, a handsome naval captain with neither fortune nor rank. What happens when they encounter each other again is movingly told in Jane Austen's last completed novel. Set in the fashionable societies of Lyme Regis and Bath, Persuasion is a brilliant satire of vanity and pretension, but, above all, it is a love story tinged with the heartache of missed opportunities.

We will talk about the book over dinner in The Pump Room restaurant in Bath, the kind of place you could imagine Jane eating if she were in Bath today. Dinner is included in the trip cost.

We will visit the sites of Bath and soak up the atmosphere of the beautiful city, little changed since Jane lived there and used for the film version of many of her books.

It is all about being socialable and making new friends. Enjoying Bath with new people that you already have a shared interest with.
ITINERARY
Friday 5th December
After everyone arrives and checked in to their accommodation, we will all meet up on Friday evening for a meal to get to know one another. These first evenings are a lovely chance to meet everyone and enjoy a relaxed evening getting to know our fellow book lovers. It is always so interesting to hear what everyone is reading.Saturday 6th December
We will meet at Mokoko coffee shop right by the Roman Baths where we can enjoy a welcome coffee and meet each other before we set off to explore Bath.We will then explore many of the sites of Bath, soaking up the stunning architecture of Bath’s most picturesque crescents, theatres, and squares. Highlights include the Guildhall, Bath Assembly Rooms, Royal Crescent, Bath Street, the Abbey and more. The walk will take approx 2 hours and will finish at the Jane Austen Centre.
After a spot of lunch, we will visit the Jane Austen centre. The Jane Austen Centre offers you a snapshot of life during Regency times and explores how living in the city of Bath affected Jane Austen and her writing.
In the evening we will have dinner in the Pump Room restaurant that retains much of the splendour of a bygone age, where we will chat about the book and Jane Austen over a meal. It is not a formal book club meeting at all. Just a relaxed conversation about the book, that you are welcome to simply listen to if you would prefer.
Sunday 7th December
For those that are going to spend a day or two in Bath, Sunday will be ideal for visiting the Christmas Market, Roman Baths, visit the spa or take a river cruise.
